Pontikonisi at down

Corfu is one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful tourist resorts. Everyone knows the view of its Pontikonisi (Mouse island) which is probably one of the most famous in Greece. It's history, together with the natural beauties of the island have for many years given it the reputation of an ideal spot for holidays. ars, discos, restaurants, souvenir shops, the casino, crowds of people on the streets day and night, idyllic bays with sand beaches- that is Corfu in the summer.
A further charm is the human presence: carefree children playing around, housewives at their high windows and a smiling Corfiot in
every step. Visitors are fortunate who happen to be on Corfu for Easter. The second of the resurrection bells is accompanied by a rather more unusual noise: the breaking of jugs and other pieces of earthenware pottery which the Corfiots throw down from their balconies.
This custom is associated, traditionally, with the joy of Our Lady and Mary Magdalene when they first discovered that the tomb of the resurrected Christ was empty.

The island of Corfu (also called Kerkyra) is one of the most popular destinations of Greece and attracts every year thousands of visitors.
Corfu is the northerly of the Ionian Islands group and lies at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, in front of Albania. The island is the second largest of the Ionians after Kefalonia. It has an area of 592 sq. km and a coastline of 216 km.

The island has a population of approximately 100,000 inhabitants and 30,000 are living in the capital.

The island is characterised by a Mediterranean mild climate with lot of rainfalls in winter. There is, for that reason, dense vegetation and an abundance of wild plants. The island is considered as the greenest in Greece. Corfu is a mountainous island with, as highest mountain, the Mt. Pantokrator (914 metres) in the northern centre.

But, the island also has several flat areas and plains. It also has two lakes and a couple of rivers.

Corfu was the first island in Greece to open itself to tourism and has become an international tourism centre with thousands of visitors every year.

But even if tourism has taken over the majority of the coastal areas, many mountainous villages has kept there authenticity.

The economy of the island depends mainly on the tourism industry. Only a small part of the economy is related to agriculture with as chief products, the olive oil and the wine.
The capital and main port of the island is also called Corfu (Kerkyra).

It is the largest town in the Ionians and also the most beautiful.

It is a town with a unique atmosphere.

It is built between two fortresses and has many elegant buildings of Italian and French architectural influences, several squares full of flowers, Byzantine churches…

Corfu is, like Santorini and Mykonos, one of the most famous places in Greece.

It attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world and is the kind of islands that has everything to offer…
